Car Loan EMI Calculator

Work out the EMI on a car loan and how much the car really costs once interest is added, before you sign at the dealership.

What is a car loan EMI calculator?

A car loan EMI calculator shows the monthly instalment for financing a vehicle and the total interest over the loan. It's most useful at the dealership, where offers are quoted as an attractive monthly figure and it's easy to lose sight of the total cost.

Enter the amount you'll borrow after your down payment, the interest rate and a tenure between one and eight years. The calculator shows the EMI, total interest and a year-by-year table of what you still owe, so you can compare a bank loan with dealer financing, or see what a bigger down payment saves.

How to use the Car Loan EMI Calculator

  1. 1.Enter the amount financed

That's the on-road price minus your down payment, not the ex-showroom price.

  2. 2.Add rate and tenure

Enter the dealer's or bank's rate and a tenure of 1 to 8 years. Shorter tenures carry less interest.

  3. 3.Compare offers

Change the rate or tenure to compare lenders, then copy or share the result.

Example: ₹8 lakh over 5 years versus 7

Borrowing ₹8,00,000 at 9% a year:

5 years: EMI
₹16,607
5 years: total interest
₹1,96,401
7 years: EMI
₹12,871
7 years: total interest
₹2,81,186

The 7-year loan lowers the EMI by ₹3,736 but adds about ₹85,000 of interest.

What a car loan really costs

A car loses value from the day it leaves the showroom, so stretching the loan for seven or eight years can leave you owing more than the car is worth. Choosing the shortest tenure whose EMI you can manage keeps both the interest and that risk down.

Car loans in India are usually fixed-rate, so the EMI stays the same for the whole tenure. Dealer offers sometimes advertise a low rate but add processing fees or insurance into the loan; compare the total repaid, not only the rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the EMI on a ₹8 lakh car loan?

At 9% for 5 years, about ₹16,607 a month, with about ₹1.96 lakh of interest in total.

How much down payment should I make?

Paying 20% or more of the on-road price keeps the loan smaller than the car's value and lowers both the EMI and the interest.

Is a 7-year car loan a good idea?

It lowers the EMI, but you pay more interest and may owe more than the car is worth for years. Five years or less is a common rule of thumb.

Can I prepay a car loan?

Usually yes, but fixed-rate car loans often carry a foreclosure charge. Check your agreement before prepaying.
