PPF Calculator

See what your Public Provident Fund account will be worth at maturity, and how much more you get by extending it in 5-year blocks.

What is PPF?

The Public Provident Fund is a government-backed savings scheme in India with a 15-year term, extendable in blocks of five years. You deposit between ₹500 and ₹1.5 lakh each financial year, and the interest, currently 7.1% a year, is tax-free, as is the amount at maturity.

This calculator projects a PPF account's value at the current rate for a 15, 20, 25 or 30-year term, assuming the same deposit every year by the 5th of April. It shows the maturity value, total deposited, interest earned and the balance each year, so you can see how strongly the later years compound.

How to use the PPF Calculator

  1. 1.Enter the yearly deposit

Anything from ₹500 to ₹1,50,000 a year. Most people aim for the full limit.

  2. 2.Check the rate

The current government rate is filled in. Change it to test a higher or lower rate.

  3. 3.Choose the term

15 years is the original term; pick 20, 25 or 30 years to include extensions with deposits.

Example: ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years

Depositing the full ₹1,50,000 every April at 7.1% a year:

Total deposited
₹22,50,000
Maturity after 15 years
₹40,68,209
Extended to 20 years
₹66,58,288
Extended to 25 years
₹1,03,08,015

balance each year = (last balance + deposit) × 1.071

The interest of about ₹18.2 lakh over 15 years is entirely tax-free.

How PPF interest works

PPF interest is calculated each month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and credited once a year on 31 March. Depositing by the 5th of April therefore earns interest on that money for the whole year, which is what the calculator assumes.

PPF is exempt at every stage: deposits qualify for the 80C deduction under the old regime, and interest and maturity are tax-free in both regimes. The rate is set by the government every quarter, so the projection uses today's rate throughout.

Frequently asked questions

What does ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF become?

At 7.1%, about ₹40.68 lakh after 15 years, from ₹22.5 lakh deposited. Extended to 25 years, about ₹1.03 crore.

When can I withdraw from PPF?

Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th financial year, and the account matures after 15 full financial years.

Can I extend PPF after 15 years?

Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh deposits. Apply within a year of maturity to keep depositing.

Is PPF better than an FD?

For long-term savers, the tax-free interest often makes PPF's return higher than a taxable FD's, but the money is locked in much longer.
