What is a YouTube title and description checker?
A title and description checker tests your text against YouTube's rules before you upload, and previews how the video will look in search results on desktop and on a phone.
It counts characters against the 100-character title limit and the 5,000-character description limit, flags the < and > characters that YouTube refuses to save, and warns if the title and description together have more than 60 hashtags, which makes YouTube ignore all of them. The preview shows where your title gets cut off and how much of the description appears under it, which is often only the first line or two. You can type new text or load a published video's title and description to review it.
How to use the Title and Description Checker
1.Type or load
Type a title and description, or load them from a video that's already published.
2.Read the checks
See the length against YouTube's limits, characters YouTube rejects and whether there are too many hashtags.
3.Preview it
Switch between the desktop search and phone previews to see where your title gets cut off.
Example: a title that fits but gets cut
Checking a draft title and description gives results like these.
- Title length
- 88 of 100: allowed
- Visible in search on phones
- about the first 70 characters
- Description length
- 1,240 of 5,000: allowed
- Hashtags
- 4: fine (the limit is 60)
- Contains < or >
- No
Everything saves, but the last 18 or so characters of the title may be hidden on phones, so the key words should move to the front.
YouTube's title and description limits
A title can be up to 100 characters and a description up to 5,000. YouTube won't save either if it contains the < or > characters, and it ignores all of a video's hashtags if there are more than 60.
Fitting the limit isn't the same as being seen. Search results and suggested videos cut titles off after about two lines, and only the opening of the description shows in search, so the words that matter most should come first.
Frequently asked questions
How long can a YouTube title be?
Up to 100 characters. Titles over about 70 characters are often cut off on phones and in suggested videos, so keep the key words near the start.
How long can a YouTube description be?
Up to 5,000 characters. Emoji and letters outside the Latin alphabet take several bytes each, so a description full of them can hit the limit sooner.
Why won't YouTube save my title?
It's probably longer than 100 characters or contains < or >, which YouTube doesn't allow in titles or descriptions.
How many hashtags can a video have?
If a video has more than 60 hashtags across its title and description, YouTube ignores all of them.
Is the preview exact?
It's close, not pixel-perfect. YouTube's layout changes with screen size, and where text is cut off depends on the width of the letters used.
