Gratuity Calculator

Find out how much gratuity you'll get when you leave or retire, whether you're eligible yet, and how much of it is tax-free.

What is gratuity?

Gratuity is a lump sum an employer pays an employee for long service, when they resign, retire or are laid off, or to their family on death. In India it's governed by the Code on Social Security, 2020, which replaced the Payment of Gratuity Act, and it's calculated from your last basic pay and the years you've worked.

This calculator applies the standard 15/26 formula for covered employers, or the 15/30 formula for others, counts your years correctly, checks eligibility for permanent and fixed-term employees, and splits the result into the tax-free and taxable parts.

How to use the Gratuity Calculator

  1. 1.Enter your last salary

Your last monthly basic pay plus dearness allowance.

  2. 2.Add your service

Years and extra months with the employer. More than six extra months counts as a full year.

  3. 3.Set your situation

Whether your employer is covered by the gratuity law, and whether you're permanent or on a fixed-term contract.

Example: 8 years 7 months on ₹60,000

A permanent employee at a covered company leaves after 8 years and 7 months, with a last basic + DA of ₹60,000:

Years counted
9 (7 months rounds up)
Gratuity
₹60,000 × 15 × 9 ÷ 26 = ₹3,11,538
Tax-free
₹3,11,538
If the employer weren't covered
₹60,000 × 15 × 8 ÷ 30 = ₹2,40,000

gratuity = last salary × 15 × years ÷ 26

Leaving one month later, after 8 years 8 months, wouldn't change the amount; leaving a month earlier, at 8 years 6 months, would count only 8 years.

The gratuity formula

For employers covered by the law, gratuity = last monthly basic + DA × 15 × years of service ÷ 26. It's 15 days' wages for every year, with a month counted as 26 working days. A final part-year of more than six months counts as a full year.

For employers not covered, the usual formula is 15/30 of the average of the last ten months' salary for each completed year. Under the labour codes in force since 21 November 2025, fixed-term employees qualify after one year instead of five. Up to ₹20 lakh of gratuity is tax-free for private-sector employees.
