What is a credit card payoff calculator?
A credit card payoff calculator shows how long it will take to clear a card balance and how much interest you'll pay on the way. Card interest is among the most expensive borrowing there is, so seeing the real cost of carrying a balance is often the push needed to clear it.
Work it either way: enter the payment you can manage to get the number of months, or the month you want to be debt-free by to get the payment needed. The calculator warns you if a payment is too small to ever clear the balance, and lists every month's payment, interest and remaining balance.
How to use the Credit Card Payoff Calculator
1.Enter the balance and rate
Your outstanding balance and the card's yearly interest rate (APR).
2.Pick a plan
Either the amount you'll pay each month, or the number of months you want it gone in.
3.Follow the schedule
Read the payoff time, total interest and the month-by-month balance.
Example: ₹1 lakh at 42% a year
A ₹1,00,000 balance on a card charging 3.5% a month, with no new spending:
- Interest in the first month
- ₹3,500
- Paying ₹5,000 a month
- 35 months, ₹74,989 interest
- Paying ₹6,000 a month
- 26 months, ₹52,717 interest
- To clear it in 12 months
- ₹10,348 a month
An extra ₹1,000 a month saves over ₹22,000 of interest and nine months of payments.
Why card debt grows so fast
Each month, interest of APR ÷ 12 is added to the balance before your payment comes off. Indian cards typically charge 3–3.75% a month, 36–45% a year, so a ₹1 lakh balance adds ₹3,500 of interest in a single month at 42%.
If your payment doesn't exceed that monthly interest, the balance never falls, which the calculator flags. Paying only the minimum due, usually around 5% of the balance, stretches repayment over years. For a target date, the required payment comes from the loan EMI formula.
Frequently asked questions
How long to pay off ₹1 lakh at ₹6,000 a month?
At 42% a year, 26 months, with about ₹52,700 of interest.
What payment clears it in a year?
₹10,348 a month for ₹1 lakh at 42%, with about ₹24,200 of interest in total.
Is paying the minimum due enough?
It avoids late fees but not interest. The balance shrinks very slowly, and new purchases lose their interest-free period while a balance is carried.
Is a personal loan cheaper than card debt?
Usually. Personal loans often cost 11–20% a year, well below card rates, so using one to clear a card can save a lot if you stop using the card.
