RD Calculator

Save a fixed amount every month and see what your recurring deposit pays at maturity, calculated the way banks and India Post do.

What is a recurring deposit?

A recurring deposit, or RD, lets you save a fixed amount every month for a set term, from six months to ten years, at a rate fixed when you open it. It suits people building a habit of saving or putting money aside for a known expense, such as a holiday or school fees.

This calculator follows the quarterly compounding method banks and India Post use, so its maturity figure matches your passbook. It's pre-filled with the current India Post 5-year RD rate, which you can change to your bank's. Alongside the maturity value it shows the total deposited, the interest and the balance at the end of each year.

How to use the RD Calculator

  1. 1.Enter the monthly deposit

Type the amount you'll deposit every month.

  2. 2.Set rate and months

Enter your bank's RD rate, or keep India Post's current 5-year rate, and the tenure in months.

  3. 3.See the maturity

Read the maturity value, total deposited, interest and the balance each year.

Example: ₹5,000 a month for 60 months

At India Post's 5-year RD rate of 6.7%, compounded quarterly:

Total deposited
₹3,00,000
Maturity value
₹3,56,829
Interest earned
₹56,829

M = Σ R × (1 + 0.067 ÷ 4)^(months left ÷ 3)

The first ₹5,000 earns interest for all 60 months; the last earns for one.

How RD maturity is calculated

Each monthly instalment earns interest from the month it's paid until maturity, compounded every quarter. The first instalment earns for the full tenure and the last for just one month. Adding them up gives the maturity value: M = Σ R × (1 + r ÷ 4)^(months left ÷ 3).

India Post's 5-year RD is a government small savings scheme whose rate is set every quarter. Bank RDs follow the same calculation at the bank's FD rate for that tenure. RD interest is taxable at your slab rate.

Frequently asked questions

At India Post's 6.7%, about ₹3,56,829 at maturity, from ₹3,00,000 deposited.

RD or SIP?

An RD's return is fixed and safe; a SIP in an equity fund can earn more over long periods but can also fall. Many people use an RD for goals under three years.

What if I miss an instalment?

Banks and India Post charge a small penalty and may close the account after several missed instalments.

Can I withdraw early?

Usually, with a lower rate. India Post allows premature closure after three years and a loan against the RD after one.
