What is a diff checker?
A diff checker compares two versions of some text and shows the differences between them. Writers use it to see an editor's changes, lawyers to compare contract drafts, students to check revisions, and developers to compare configuration files or code outside version control.
This checker compares by line, word or character, can ignore case and whitespace, and shows a combined view with additions and deletions marked, plus a count of what was added and removed. Nothing is uploaded, so confidential drafts stay on your device.
How to use the Text Diff Checker
1.Paste both versions
The original on the left, the changed version on the right.
2.Choose the detail
Lines for code, words for prose, characters for small edits; optionally ignore case or whitespace.
3.Read the changes
Added text is green and underlined, removed text red and struck through.
Example: an edited paragraph
Comparing the two sample texts word by word:
- Removed
- jumps, went
- Added
- leaps, walked, together, a new last line
- Unchanged
- It was a sunny day.
The unchanged middle sentence is left unmarked, so the eye goes straight to the edits.
How the comparison works
The diff uses the jsdiff library's implementation of Myers' algorithm, the same approach Git uses, which finds the smallest set of insertions and deletions that turns one text into the other.
Line mode suits code and lists, where whole lines move; word mode suits contracts, essays and copy edits; character mode catches one-letter typos. Changes are marked with underline and strike-through as well as colour, so they're clear without relying on colour alone.
Frequently asked questions
Is my text uploaded?
No. Both texts are compared in your browser.
Can it compare code?
Yes. Use line mode, and ignore whitespace if indentation changed.
Can it compare Word or PDF files?
Copy the text out of each document and paste it here. Formatting isn't compared.
Why does a small edit show a whole word changed?
In word mode the smallest unit is a word. Switch to characters to see the exact letters.
