Area Converter

An area converter changes a surface measurement from one unit to another, such as square feet to square metres or acres to hectares. It's most needed in property: Indian builders quote carpet and super built-up areas in square feet, plot registries use square yards or metres, and farmland is measured in acres or hectares.

Enter the area and choose the units to get an exact conversion, along with a table of the same area in every unit, from square centimetres to square miles. Because area units are squares of length units, the factors are larger than people expect, which this avoids getting wrong.

Flats are usually sold by the square foot, plots by the square yard, which is called a gaj in north India, and farmland by the acre or hectare. One square yard is 9 square feet; one acre is 43,560 square feet or 4,840 square yards; one hectare is 10,000 square metres or about 2.47 acres.

Traditional units such as the bigha, guntha and cent vary from state to state, so they aren't included here; check the local definition before converting them.
