What is a Unix timestamp?
A Unix timestamp, or epoch time, is a single number for a moment in time: the seconds that have passed since the start of 1970 in UTC. Computers like it because it's compact, sorts correctly and has no time zone or daylight saving to get wrong.
Developers meet these numbers in API responses, database rows, JWT expiry claims and log files, and need to read them quickly. This converter shows the current timestamp live, converts any timestamp to UTC, ISO 8601 and your local time with a relative "3 days ago", and converts a date and time back to a timestamp in seconds or milliseconds.
How to use the Unix Timestamp Converter
1.Paste a timestamp
10 digits are read as seconds, 13 as milliseconds, automatically.
2.Read the date
See it in UTC, ISO 8601, your own time zone, and how long ago or ahead it is.
3.Or go the other way
Pick a date, time and zone to get the timestamp in seconds and milliseconds.
Example: 1735689600
Pasting the 10-digit timestamp 1735689600:
- Read as
- seconds
- UTC
- Wednesday, 1 January 2025, 00:00:00
- ISO 8601
- 2025-01-01T00:00:00.000Z
- In India (IST)
- 1 January 2025, 05:30:00
- Milliseconds
- 1735689600000
The same number is midnight in London and half past five in the morning in India.
What the numbers mean
Unix time counts seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, ignoring leap seconds. Most databases and APIs store seconds; JavaScript, Java and many logging tools use milliseconds, which is why the same moment can be 1735689600 or 1735689600000.
Timestamps have no time zone: the same number is the same instant everywhere, and only the readable form changes. Systems that store it in a signed 32-bit integer overflow after 2147483647, 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038, the so-called Year 2038 problem.
Frequently asked questions
What is 1735689600 as a date?
1 January 2025 at 00:00:00 UTC, which is 5:30 am the same day in India.
Seconds or milliseconds?
Count the digits: about 10 for seconds, 13 for milliseconds, for dates in this era. The converter detects it for you.
How do I get the current timestamp in code?
JavaScript: Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000). Python: int(time.time()). The live counter above shows the same value.
Can timestamps be negative?
Yes. Negative numbers are moments before 1970; −86400 is 31 December 1969.
