Length Converter

Convert between centimetres, inches, feet, metres, kilometres, miles and other units of length, with every unit shown at once.

What is a length converter?

A length converter changes a measurement from one unit of distance to another, such as centimetres to inches or kilometres to miles. Metric units are used across most of the world, while the US, and often the UK for heights and road distances, still use inches, feet and miles.

That mismatch comes up constantly: height on a form, screen and TV sizes in inches, furniture dimensions, running distances, or a map in miles. Enter a value, choose the units, and this converter shows the answer with up to ten significant figures plus a table of the same length in every unit from millimetres to nautical miles.

How to use the Length Converter

  1. 1.Type a length

Enter the number you want to convert.

  2. 2.Pick the units

Choose the unit you have and the one you want; the swap button flips them.

  3. 3.See every unit

The table below converts the same length into all the other units.

Example: a height of 170 cm

Converting 170 centimetres:

Inches
66.93
Feet
5.577
Feet and inches
5 ft 6.9 in
Metres
1.7

inches = cm ÷ 2.54

The leftover 0.577 ft times 12 gives the 6.9 inches.

Exact definitions

Since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959, an inch is exactly 2.54 cm, a foot is exactly 30.48 cm and a mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres, so these conversions are exact, not approximations. A nautical mile, used at sea and in aviation, is defined as 1,852 metres.

For height, people often want feet and inches together: divide the inches by 12, so 66.93 inches is 5 feet 6.9 inches.
