Profit Margin Calculator

Work out profit, margin and markup from what something costs and what you sell it for, or set the price that gives the margin you want.

What is a profit margin calculator?

A profit margin calculator shows how much of each sale you keep. Shopkeepers, resellers, freelancers and small manufacturers use it to price products, check whether a discount still leaves a profit, and compare suppliers.

It works three ways: from a cost and a selling price, from a cost and the margin you want, or from a cost and a markup percentage. Whichever you start with, it shows the selling price, the profit or loss, the margin and the markup, because confusing margin with markup is one of the most common pricing mistakes.

How to use the Profit Margin Calculator

  1. 1.Choose what you know

The selling price, a margin you're aiming for, or a markup you add to cost.

  2. 2.Enter the numbers

Type the cost, then the price, margin or markup.

  3. 3.Read all four

Selling price, profit, margin and markup appear together.

Example: bought for ₹750, sold for ₹1,200

An item that costs ₹750 and sells for ₹1,200:

Profit
₹450
Margin
37.5% (450 ÷ 1,200)
Markup
60% (450 ÷ 750)
Price for a 35% margin instead
₹1,153.85

margin = (price − cost) ÷ price

Adding 35% to the cost would give ₹1,012.50, a margin of only about 26%, which is why the formulas must not be mixed.

Margin versus markup

Margin is profit as a share of the selling price: (price − cost) ÷ price. Markup is profit as a share of the cost: (price − cost) ÷ cost. The same sale has a smaller margin than markup: buying at ₹750 and selling at ₹1,200 is a 37.5% margin but a 60% markup.

To hit a target margin, price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). A 35% margin on a ₹750 item needs a price of ₹1,153.85. Margins can't reach 100%, because that would mean a free item.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between margin and markup?

Margin divides profit by the selling price; markup divides it by the cost. Markup is always the larger number for a profitable sale.

How do I price for a 40% margin?

Divide the cost by 0.6. A ₹600 item needs a price of ₹1,000.

What is a good profit margin?

It varies hugely by industry; groceries run on a few percent, software on far more. Compare with businesses like yours.

Is this gross or net margin?

Gross margin, on the cost of the item. Net margin also subtracts rent, salaries and other overheads.
