Image to Text (OCR)

Copy the words out of a screenshot, scanned page or photo of a document instead of retyping them. Pick the language, and the text is read on your device.

What is image to text (OCR)?

OCR, optical character recognition, finds letters in a picture and turns them into text you can copy, edit and search. It's how you get the words out of a screenshot, a scanned certificate, a photo of a notice board or a page of a book without typing them again.

This tool uses Tesseract, a well-established open-source OCR engine, compiled to run inside your browser. It supports English, ten Indian languages and several European ones. The picture itself is never uploaded; the engine and the language model are fetched from a public CDN on first use and then cached by your browser.

How to use the Image to Text (OCR)

  1. 1.Choose an image

A screenshot, scan or clear photo of printed text works best.

  2. 2.Pick the language

English is the default. Choose English + Hindi for mixed documents, or one of the Indian and European languages.

  3. 3.Extract and copy

Press Extract text, then copy the result or download it as a .txt file.

Example: text from a phone screenshot

A 1080 × 2400 screenshot of an article in English:

Language
English
First run downloads
engine about 1.5 MB, English model about 2.9 MB
Later runs
nothing to download
Typical confidence
90% or more on a clean screenshot

Screenshots have perfectly sharp, straight text, so they read almost without errors. A slanted phone photo of the same page usually needs a crop and a check afterwards.

Getting accurate results

OCR is most accurate on sharp, straight, well-lit printed text with letters at least 20 pixels tall. Crop away everything that isn't text, rotate the image upright, and avoid shadows or glare across the page. Screenshots usually come out almost perfect; handwriting and decorative fonts usually don't.

The confidence figure is the engine's own average certainty across words. Below about 70%, check the text carefully against the image.

Frequently asked questions

Can it read handwriting?

Only neat block capitals, and not reliably. The engine is trained on printed text.

Which Indian languages are supported?

Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi and Urdu, plus English with Hindi for mixed text.

Is my image uploaded?

No. The engine runs inside your browser. The only download is the engine and the language model, the first time you use each language.

Can I extract text from a PDF?

Convert the pages to images with the PDF to JPG tool first, then read each page here. A PDF made from a document, rather than a scan, often lets you copy its text directly.

Why is the layout lost?

OCR returns text line by line; columns and tables become plain lines, so you may need to tidy them.
