Favicon Generator

Create every icon a website needs, from a letter, an emoji or your logo, and get the HTML to paste into your page head. Download the whole set as one ZIP.

What is a favicon generator?

A favicon is the small icon that identifies a website in browser tabs, bookmarks, history and search results, and on phone home screens when someone saves your site. Different devices look for different files and sizes, which is why making them by hand is tedious.

This generator draws all of them from one design: favicon.ico, 16 and 32 px PNGs, a 180 px Apple touch icon, 192 and 512 px Android icons, and a site.webmanifest that points to them. Start from a letter, an emoji or your logo, preview it at real sizes and in a mock browser tab, and copy the five link tags. Everything is drawn in your browser.

How to use the Favicon Generator

  1. 1.Start from text or an image

Type one or two letters or an emoji, or switch to From an image and choose a logo.

  2. 2.Style it

Pick a square, rounded or circle background and its colour, the text colour and font, or the padding around a logo.

  3. 3.Download and add the tags

Get the ZIP, put the files in your site's root folder and paste the link tags into the head of your pages.

Example: a letter icon for a new blog

A white Z on a blue rounded square, site name "Zed Notes":

favicon.ico
16, 32 and 48 px in one file
PNG icons
16, 32, 180, 192 and 512 px
site.webmanifest
name "Zed Notes", theme colour #2547d0
HTML
5 link tags for the page head
Download
favicon.zip with 8 files

The ZIP holds favicon.ico, the five PNGs, the manifest and an HTML file with the tags, ready to drop into a site's root folder.

Which files do browsers actually use?

Desktop browsers show favicon.ico or the 32 px PNG in tabs and bookmarks. iPhones and iPads use apple-touch-icon.png when someone adds your site to the home screen; iOS rounds its corners and fills transparency with black, so that icon always gets a solid background. Android and installable web apps read the 192 and 512 px icons through site.webmanifest.

Icons at 16 px are tiny, so one bold letter or a simple mark reads far better than a detailed logo.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I put the favicon files?

In the root of your site, next to the home page, so they're served at /favicon.ico and similar. Then paste the tags into the head of every page.

What's inside the favicon.ico?

Three PNG images, 16, 32 and 48 pixels, in one file. Every current browser and Windows reads PNG-based ICO files.

Why isn't my new favicon showing?

Browsers cache favicons for a long time. Open the icon's address directly, hard-refresh, or try a private window to see the new one.

Can I use an emoji?

Yes. It's drawn with your device's emoji font, so it looks like your system's emoji style (Apple, Google or Microsoft).
