Barcode Generator

Create Code 128, EAN-13 and UPC-A barcodes for labels, inventory and products, with check digits calculated and verified for you.

What is a barcode generator?

A barcode generator draws the familiar pattern of black bars that scanners read as numbers or text. Small businesses use barcodes for inventory and stock labels, shipping and courier slips, library and asset tags, and for printing product codes they've licensed for retail.

This generator supports three of the most used linear barcodes: Code 128 for any short text, and EAN-13 and UPC-A for retail products. It calculates and checks the check digit, lets you set the bar width and height and whether to print the text, and downloads the result as SVG or PNG. No library or upload is involved.

How to use the Barcode Generator

  1. 1.Pick the type

Code 128 for any text, EAN-13 for products sold in India and most countries, UPC-A for the US and Canada.

  2. 2.Enter the value

For EAN and UPC, leave off the last digit and the check digit is added, or type it to have it checked.

  3. 3.Size and download

Set bar width and height, then download SVG for print or PNG.

Example: an EAN-13 check digit

Entering the 12 digits 890123456789:

Weighted sum
8 + 27 + 0 + 3 + 2 + 9 + 4 + 15 + 6 + 21 + 8 + 27 = 130
Next multiple of 10
130
Check digit
0
Full EAN-13
8901234567890

check = (10 − sum mod 10) mod 10

Typing 8901234567891 instead would show an error, because 1 isn't the right check digit.

Which barcode to use

Code 128 encodes letters, digits and symbols compactly and is the standard for shipping labels, warehouse bins and asset tags; long runs of digits are packed two per symbol. EAN-13 is the 13-digit product code on retail goods; Indian products registered with GS1 India start with 890. UPC-A is its 12-digit North American form.

The last EAN digit is a check digit: weight the first 12 digits alternately 1 and 3, add them up, and take what's needed to reach the next multiple of 10. Scanners use it to catch misreads. To sell products in shops you need numbers issued by GS1, not invented ones.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make a barcode for my product?

You can draw one here, but retail barcodes must use a number licensed from GS1 (GS1 India for Indian businesses) so it's unique worldwide.

What is the check digit?

A final digit calculated from the others that lets scanners detect a wrong read. The generator adds or verifies it.

What can Code 128 encode?

Letters, digits, spaces and common symbols (printable ASCII), such as order numbers and SKUs.

What size should I print it?

Keep the white space either side and don't squash it; most scanners read a bar width of 2 px at normal print resolution.
