What is a temperature converter?
A temperature converter changes a reading between the Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin scales. Celsius is used for weather and cooking in most countries including India, Fahrenheit in the United States, and Kelvin in science, where it starts from absolute zero.
Unlike length or weight, temperature scales don't just differ by a factor: Fahrenheit is also offset by 32 degrees, which is why mental conversion goes wrong. Enter a value and this converter applies the exact formulas, showing the result in all three scales, from a fever reading to an oven setting or a lab temperature.
How to use the Temperature Converter
1.Enter a temperature
Negative values are fine, down to absolute zero.
2.Pick the scales
Choose from and to; swap to go the other way.
3.Read the result
All three scales are shown together.
Example: body temperature, 37 °C
Converting 37 degrees Celsius:
- Fahrenheit
- 98.6 °F
- Kelvin
- 310.15 K
- Quick estimate (double + 30)
- 104 °F
°F = 37 × 9 ÷ 5 + 32
The quick estimate is off by over 5 degrees at body temperature, so use the exact figure for health readings.
The formulas
°F = °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32, and °C = (°F − 32) × 5 ÷ 9. Kelvin uses the same size of degree as Celsius but starts at absolute zero: K = °C + 273.15. Temperatures below absolute zero, −273.15 °C or −459.67 °F, don't exist, so the converter rejects them.
−40 is the one temperature that reads the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit. A quick mental estimate for Celsius to Fahrenheit is to double and add 30, which is close for everyday weather.
