Data Size Converter

A data size converter changes an amount of digital data between units such as megabytes, gigabytes and terabytes, and between the decimal units drive makers use and the binary units operating systems use. It also converts to bits, the unit for internet and network speeds.

It answers practical questions: will this file fit, why does a new drive or phone show less space than the box says, how long will a download take on a given connection, or how a cloud storage plan in TB compares with a drive in GB. Every unit is shown at once so you can compare.

Drive makers and network providers use decimal units: 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. Windows, and memory chips, count in powers of 2, where 1 GiB is 1,073,741,824 bytes, though Windows labels it "GB". A 256 GB drive therefore shows as about 238 GB on a Windows PC, with nothing missing.

Network speeds are in bits, not bytes: 100 Mbps is 100 megabits a second, which is 12.5 megabytes a second at best, so a 1 GB download takes about 80 seconds.
