Discount Calculator

Find the price after a discount, how much you save, and what "30% off plus an extra 10%" really works out to.

What is a discount calculator?

A discount calculator works out what you'll actually pay when an item is on sale, and how much you save. It's handy in shops and online sales, where offers are often stacked: a sale price, then a coupon, then a bank or card discount, sometimes with tax added at the end.

Enter the original price, the main discount, an optional extra discount and an optional tax rate. The calculator shows the final price, the money saved, the true combined discount percentage and the price after the first discount alone. It works in rupees or any currency.

How to use the Discount Calculator

  1. 1.Enter the price

    Type the original, marked price.

  2. 2.Add the discounts

Enter the sale discount, and any extra coupon or bank offer applied on top.

  3. 3.Add tax if needed

If tax is charged after the discount, enter its rate; otherwise leave it at zero.

Example: ₹2,499 with 30% and 10% off

A ₹2,499 shirt in a 30% off sale, with an extra 10% off for paying by card:

After 30% off
₹1,749.30
After the extra 10%
₹1,574.37
You save
₹924.63
Total discount
37%

price × (1 − 0.30) × (1 − 0.10)

The card offer saves ₹174.93, a tenth of the already-discounted price.

Why stacked discounts don't add up

A second discount applies to the already-reduced price, not the original. 30% off and then 10% off leaves 0.70 × 0.90 = 0.63 of the price, a total discount of 37%, not 40%.

Where tax is charged after the discount, as with GST on a discounted invoice, the tax is worked out on the reduced amount. Prices in Indian shops are usually shown including GST, in which case leave tax at zero.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the saving, then subtract it from the price.

Is 30% + 10% off the same as 40% off?

No. Applied one after the other, they're 37% off in total.

What is the price of ₹2,499 at 30% off?

₹1,749.30. With a further 10% card discount, ₹1,574.37.

Does the order of two discounts matter?

No. Multiplying by 0.7 then 0.9 gives the same result as 0.9 then 0.7.
