What is an X character counter?
An X character counter tells you how much of the 280-character limit a post uses, counted the way X counts. Ordinary counters get it wrong for posts with links or emoji, which is how a post that looks short gets rejected.
This counter applies X's published weighting rules: links count as 23, emoji as 2, Chinese, Japanese and Korean as 2, and most other characters as 1. It shows the weighted count, the characters as typed and the links found, switches between the standard and Premium limits, and turns over-length text into a numbered thread.
How to use the X (Twitter) Character Counter
1.Type or paste your post
The count updates as you type, with a bar that turns red past the limit.
2.Pick your account type
Standard accounts have 280; X Premium allows long posts of up to 25,000.
3.Post or thread it
If it's too long, copy the numbered thread posts one by one.
Example: a launch post with a link and an emoji
"Just shipped 14 new image and PDF tools 🚀 … Try them at zapkit.org":
- Characters as typed
- 124
- zapkit.org (10 characters)
- counts as 23: +13
- 🚀 (1 character)
- counts as 2: +1
- X's count
- 138 of 280, 142 left
The post uses 14 more characters than it appears to; long links can make the difference go the other way.
Why X's count differs from a normal counter
X weights characters. Every link counts as 23, however long or short, because X shortens it. Each emoji counts as 2, even ones built from several code points like a family or a skin tone. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as 2. Latin letters, and also Hindi and other Indian scripts, count as 1.
This counter follows those rules from X's open-source twitter-text library, so its number should match the app's.
