SGPA Calculator

Add your subjects, their credits and the grade you got in each, and see your semester GPA straight away. Works with the UGC O/A+/A letters and the AA/AB/BB style used by IITs and NITs.

What is SGPA?

SGPA, the semester grade point average, sums up how you did in one semester as a single number out of 10. Indian universities that follow the UGC's choice-based credit system print it on every semester grade card, and it feeds into your CGPA.

Each subject's grade is turned into grade points, multiplied by the subject's credits to give credit points, and the total is divided by the total credits. This calculator does that for any number of subjects, on the two common Indian letter scales, and shows the credits and credit points behind the result so you can match it against your marksheet.

How to use the SGPA Calculator

  1. 1.Pick your grade letters

Choose the scale printed on your grade card: O, A+, A… or AA, AB, BB…

  2. 2.Enter each subject

Type its credits and pick the grade. Add rows for labs and electives too; a 0-credit audit course doesn't count.

  3. 3.Read your SGPA

It updates as you type. Copy it or share the link, which keeps every row.

Example: a five-subject semester

Credits and grades on the UGC scale:

4 credits, A+ (9)
36 credit points
4 credits, A (8)
32 credit points
3 credits, O (10)
30 credit points
3 credits, B+ (7)
21 credit points
2 credits, A (8)
16 credit points

SGPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ credits

135 credit points ÷ 16 credits = 8.4375, an SGPA of 8.44.

Why credits matter

SGPA is a weighted average, not a plain one. A 4-credit theory course counts twice as much as a 2-credit lab, so a B in a heavy subject pulls your SGPA down more than a B in a light one. That's why getting your credits right matters as much as your grades.

A failed subject (F or FF) adds its credits with zero points, which lowers the SGPA until you clear it; universities differ in how they show re-appeared grades, so check your own ordinance.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA covers one semester. CGPA is the credit-weighted average of all your semesters so far; use the CGPA calculator for that.

What grade points does each letter carry?

On the UGC 10-point scale: O 10, A+ 9, A 8, B+ 7, B 6, C 5, P 4 and F 0. The AA scale runs AA 10, AB 9, BB 8, BC 7, CC 6, CD 5, DD 4, FF 0.

My university's SGPA is 0.01 different. Why?

Some universities cut the result to two decimals instead of rounding it. This calculator rounds.

Can I convert my SGPA to a percentage?

Yes, with the CGPA to percentage converter, which uses the same formulas for SGPA.
