Sleep Calculator

Waking in the middle of a sleep cycle is why some mornings feel groggy. Tell the calculator when you need to get up, or when you're going to bed, and get times that land between cycles.

What is a sleep calculator?

A sleep calculator works out bedtimes or wake-up times that fit whole sleep cycles. Because each cycle lasts about 90 minutes, sleeping for 6, 7.5 or 9 hours lines your alarm up with the lighter sleep at the end of a cycle.

Enter the time you need to wake up and this calculator lists bedtimes for six, five, four and three cycles, allowing 15 minutes to fall asleep; or enter your bedtime to get wake-up times. Five and six cycles, the 7.5–9 hours most adults need, are highlighted.

How to use the Sleep Calculator

  1. 1.Pick what you know

Your wake-up time, or the time you're going to bed.

  2. 2.Enter the time

    The list updates straight away.

  3. 3.Choose a time

Five or six cycles, 7.5 to 9 hours, are marked as recommended for adults.

Example: a 6:30 am alarm

Bedtimes that end on a full cycle:

6 cycles, 9 h
9:15 pm
5 cycles, 7 h 30 min
10:45 pm
4 cycles, 6 h
12:15 am
3 cycles, 4 h 30 min
1:45 am

Bedtime = wake-up time − cycles × 90 min − 15 min

For a 6:30 alarm, aim to be in bed by 10:45 pm for five full cycles, or 9:15 pm for six.

Sleep cycles

Through the night you move through light sleep, deep sleep and REM (dreaming) sleep in cycles of roughly 90 minutes. Waking at the end of a cycle, in light sleep, usually feels easier than being pulled out of deep sleep by an alarm.

Cycle lengths differ between people and through the night, so use the times as a starting point and adjust by 10–15 minutes until mornings feel right. A regular schedule, even at weekends, matters more than hitting an exact minute.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours of sleep do I need?

Adults 7–9 hours, teenagers 8–10 and school-age children 9–12, according to sleep medicine guidelines.

Why add 15 minutes?

Most people take 10–20 minutes to fall asleep; the times allow for it.

Is 6 hours enough if it's four full cycles?

It may feel better than 6.5 hours that ends mid-cycle, but most adults need more than 6 hours regularly.

What helps me fall asleep on time?

Dim lights and screens an hour before bed, avoid caffeine after early afternoon, and keep the room cool and dark.
