UPSC Prelims 2027 Countdown

Days left to the Civil Services Preliminary Examination on Sunday, 23 May 2027, from UPSC's 2027 calendar, with the Mains date for planning beyond.

What is the UPSC Prelims countdown?

The UPSC Prelims countdown shows the time left until the first stage of the Civil Services Examination, which recruits for the IAS, IPS, IFS and other central services. The same Prelims also screens candidates for the Indian Forest Service.

With months-long syllabuses, aspirants often plan in phases: foundation, revision, and mock tests. This countdown runs to 9:30 am IST on Prelims day and shows days, hours and minutes, with the status of the date and links to the other major exams. It keeps going to the next year's Prelims once UPSC publishes the new calendar.

How to use the UPSC Prelims 2027 Countdown

  1. 1.Watch the countdown

It counts to the 9:30 am IST start of General Studies Paper I.

  2. 2.Mark the application window

The notification is expected in January 2027, with applications closing in early February.

  3. 3.Plan for both stages

Mains is scheduled from 20 August 2027, so answer writing can't wait until after Prelims.

Example: phases from 1 January 2027

142 days to Prelims, split into phases:

Revision of GS subjects
about 80 days
Current affairs consolidation
about 30 days
Full tests (GS and CSAT)
about 30 days
Rest before the exam
2 days

142 days from New Year still leaves time for a full revision cycle and a month of tests before 23 May.

The two Prelims papers

Prelims has two objective papers on the same day, each two hours long and worth 200 marks. General Studies Paper I (100 questions) decides the merit list. Paper II, the Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT, 80 questions), is qualifying: you need 33% in it, but its marks aren't added. Wrong answers cost a third of the question's marks.

Prelims only screens candidates for the Mains; its marks don't count towards the final rank.
