Typing Speed Test

Find out how fast and accurately you type. Pick a length, start typing the passage, and your words per minute and accuracy update as you go.

What is a typing speed test?

A typing speed test measures how many words per minute you can type and how accurately. It's useful practice for data entry and computer-based job tests, for checking progress while learning touch typing, or simply for curiosity.

This test gives you a passage built from short paragraphs in random order, so it's different each time. The timer starts when you type the first character, mistakes are highlighted as you go, and the results show net and raw words per minute, accuracy and the number of errors. Everything runs in your browser, and you can share your score with a link.

How to use the Typing Speed Test

  1. 1.Choose a length

30 seconds for a quick check, 1 minute for the standard test, 2 minutes for a steadier figure.

  2. 2.Type the passage

The clock starts with your first key. Mistakes turn red; you can fix them with Backspace.

  3. 3.See your result

When time runs out you get WPM, raw WPM, accuracy and mistakes. Press New text for a different passage.

Example: a one-minute test

What the numbers mean after 60 seconds:

Characters typed
230
Correct characters
220
Net speed
220 ÷ 5 = 44 WPM
Raw speed
230 ÷ 5 = 46 WPM
Accuracy
220 ÷ 230 = 95.7%

WPM = (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes

Ten mistakes cost 2 WPM here; at 95.7% accuracy, slowing down slightly would likely raise the net speed.

How WPM is counted

Typing speed uses a standard "word" of five characters, including spaces, so long and short words even out. Net WPM counts only correctly typed characters; raw WPM counts everything you typed. The gap between them shows how much time mistakes are costing you.

Government typing tests in India, such as for SSC posts, often ask for about 35 words per minute in English and 30 in Hindi, though each exam sets its own rules and method. For everyday work, 40 WPM is comfortable and 60 or more is fast.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good typing speed?

Around 40 WPM is average for people who type daily. 60–70 WPM is fast, and professional typists often exceed 80.

Why can't I paste into the box?

Pasting is turned off so the test measures typing.

How do I get faster?

Practise touch typing with your fingers on the home row, look at the screen instead of the keys, and focus on accuracy first; speed follows.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, but phone keyboards are slower and autocorrect can interfere, so results aren't comparable with a physical keyboard.
